The original finishes in this loft condominium were fairly stock from the developer: Maple laminate cabinetry, white appliances, maple hollow-core bi-fold doors in front of the washer and dryer, Formica counter-tops, over-mount sink, and simple faucet.
I designed the new kitchen with 42inch custom cherry cabinetry, featuring full-extension drawers and trays, raised panels on the doors and drawers, fluted moldings, corbels, finished side panels, crown molding, and self-closing drawer slides. The cherry woodwork was finished with richer brown stain color to blend with the floors and original wood ceilings. A couple of beveled glass-paneled doors showcases cookbooks and glassware, with in-cabinet and under-cabinet lighting. Added bonus: The under-cabinet lighting is recessed into the bottom of the wall cabinetry, so that the wiring is completely hidden, yet accessible within the cabinet under a lower panel.
The center island was extended 2 feet longer than the original island to provide additional storage and accommodate eight elevated bar stools for dining. Full-height granite backsplashes also creates a more polished look.
Another interesting aspect that was designed into the kitchen was matching doors in front of the washer and dryer area on the right side. The width and projection of the washer and dryer cabinetry is in relationship with the opposite side of the kitchen, where the refrigerator cabinetry projects.
