One of the key differences between ordinary and extraordinary is finishes, i.e., what kind of fixtures and materials are being used in a space, and how those elements coordinate with each other. In general, more luxurious finishes are being used with natural materials:
- Cleaner looks hide the mess
- More storage
- Custom closets
- Larger rooms
Baths:
- Multiple shower heads
- Spa-like environment
- Recessed areas for soaps, shampoo bottles, and shaving elements
- Separate shower and bathtub
- Water closet for toilet
- Exotic wood veneers on custom furniture and cabinetry
- Wood flooring: More exotic woods, including Brazilian cherry and bamboo
- Custom paint finishes, including washes
- Beverage centers in the bath and bedroom
- Televisions in the baths
- Heated floors
- Original artwork
Not so hot:
- Marbleizing and some other over-used faux finishes
- Wallpaper
- Fluorescent lighting
- Brass accents and fixtures
- Fluffy covers for the toilet seat and toilet rugs
