Caring for Your Hardwood Floors
Jun 16 Filed under: Care And Maintenance
Wood flooring has increased in popularity due to several market trends, including a more comfortable feel (than tile), reduction in allergens in the home (over carpeting), and overall…a warm, beautiful appearance.
To protect your investment and retain the beauty of your wood floors, use quality wood floor products and follow some of the general do’s and don’ts:
- All hardwood floors experience some expansions and contractions as the seasons and humidity levels change. Using a humidifier or a dehumidifier in conjunction with a furnace or air conditioning will maintain your home’s relative humidity at 30% to 50%.
- Moisture is your floor’s greatest enemy. Wipe spills immediately. Don’t let water stand on your floors, and never use a wet mop. If you have wood flooring in your kitchen, place an area rug in front of the sink.
- Dirt, dust and grit can cause dulling and scratches in the finish. Sweep, dust, mop or vacuum regularly, but never vacuum with the beater bars operating. Use doormats at all exterior entrances to trap dirt and grit, and clean them regularly.
- Make sure that heels of shoes, especially high heels, are in good repair. Unprotected heel tips or nails can damage the floor.
- Use felt or other fabric glides on the legs of all furniture and periodically check to see that they remain clean. Avoid sliding heavy furniture and appliances across the floor. Pick them up if possible or move by placing them on a piece of thick carpet placed face-down.
- Direct sunlight can cause wood floors to change color over time. Use sheers, drapery, curtains, or blinds to limit sunlight exposure.
